The Garden City Pool Site Problem
A Pool Is Only as Good as the Ground Around It
In Garden City, the hardest part of a backyard pool is rarely the pool: it is the water, access, and space surrounding it.
A pool changes how water behaves on a Garden City lot. The shell itself is the pool builder's work, but everything surrounding it decides whether the backyard stays dry and usable. Deck runoff, splash-out, roof downspouts, and irrigation spray from the neighbor's side all need somewhere to go. On the compact lots common across older Garden City blocks, there is very little room to send that water, and a deck pitched the wrong way can push it toward the house, a fence line, or the property next door.
Location along the river adds another layer. Homes near the Boise River and the Greenbelt, and properties around the Lake Harbor ponds, can sit where groundwater runs higher and floodplain questions come up during permitting. That affects where a pool can reasonably go, how deep surrounding drains can run, and how the deck base is built. Older parts of town may also have canal or ditch water crossing or bordering a yard, which has to be respected in the layout. Our Garden City drainage work starts from those conditions.
Then there is access. Many Garden City cottages and infill homes have one narrow side yard, a detached garage, or a shared drive, and some newer homes leave almost no staging space at all. Equipment, excavated soil, base rock, and deck materials all have to come through the same gap. Lines for pool equipment, lighting, and a heater or fire feature need routes that avoid sprinkler mains and existing services. Planning those paths early keeps the pool builder's crew and ours from working against each other.
How Altavera handles it
We walk the lot with the pool location in mind, flag groundwater, ditch, and access concerns, and share layouts with your pool builder so both scopes line up. Grading and drainage go in first, sleeves and utility paths second, then the deck and surrounding hardscape, then fencing and planting.
