Artificial Turf Installation for the Treasure Valley

Turf that drains down through the base, not across the yard.

Altavera Construction installs artificial turf and pet-friendly turf for homeowners across Ada, Canyon, and Gem counties. We excavate, build a compacted drainable base, set edging and seams, and add infill so the surface stays flat, with drainage and irrigation handled by the same team.

Why Turf Fails

What the Ground Does to Artificial Turf When the Base Is an Afterthought

Most turf complaints, from ripples to soggy corners, trace back to water that has nowhere to go below the surface.

Many Treasure Valley lots sit on hard, slow-draining subsoil or a layer of compacted builder fill. Lay turf over either one without a drainage plan and rain, pet urine, and snowmelt collect in the base instead of leaving it. That wet layer freezes in January, and the frost heave shows up as lumps and soft spots under the blades by spring.

Site conditions change the job from one yard to the next. Some lots take on irrigation or runoff water from neighboring properties, sloped lots shed water and soil once they are disturbed, and planned communities may have HOA landscape rules on turf. Summer sun matters too: like any plastic, synthetic turf gets much hotter than natural grass in full sun, so placement, shade, and a nearby hose bib or irrigation zone for rinsing are part of the plan.

How Altavera handles it

We read the site before choosing a base, checking how the subsoil drains, where runoff enters the yard, and what HOA rules apply. Drainage and grading get solved first, then the base is excavated, compacted in lifts, and graded to shed water before any turf is unrolled.

What's Included

Artificial Turf Services Across the Treasure Valley

01

Backyard Turf Lawns

A full turf lawn for homeowners tired of brown patches, mowing, and thin soil. We remove existing sod or weeds, excavate to a consistent depth, and build a compacted drainable base graded away from the house. Turf is laid with the grain running one direction so the color reads evenly from the patio.

Includes

  • Sod and weed removal
  • Excavation
  • Compacted drainable base
  • Edging
  • Seaming
  • Infill

02

Pet-Friendly Turf and Dog Runs

Dog runs and pet yards need a base that lets urine and rinse water move straight down instead of pooling. Turf drains on its own, and Altavera can install extra drainage access in pet areas. No infill eliminates odor, so pet turf needs to be kept clean and rinsed regularly; we lay out the space so it is easy to hose off.

Includes

  • Free-draining base
  • Drainage outlet where needed
  • Extra drainage access available
  • Secured perimeter
  • Rinse access planning

03

Side Yards and Narrow Spaces

Side yards are often shaded, narrow, and full of dead grass or gravel that migrates. Turf turns them into clean, usable paths or dog runs. We keep the base pitched away from foundations, tie into downspouts or drains where needed, and secure every edge along fences and walls.

Includes

  • Grading away from foundation
  • Downspout tie-ins
  • Base preparation
  • Edge securing
  • Seams

04

Play Area Turf

Turf play zones for swing sets, playhouses, and open running space, built so the surface stays level and drains after a storm or a sprinkler pass. Play areas require a deeper base for fall-zone compliance, so we plan the layout around equipment footprints, build that deeper base, and finish edges so nothing lifts under active play.

Includes

  • Layout planning
  • Excavation
  • Compacted base
  • Edging
  • Infill

05

Putting-Style Practice Areas

Short-pile turf areas for chipping and putting practice, shaped with gentle contours and set on a firm, smooth base. Sized to the yard and blended with surrounding turf or landscape beds.

06

Failed Turf Rebuilds

Turf that ripples or puddles usually has a base problem. Altavera rebuilds failed turf: we pull it back, correct the drainage and compaction, and reinstall or replace the surface as the site requires.

07

Turf Transitions at Patios and Beds

Turf edges that meet patios, walkways, and planting beds cleanly. Coordinated with hardscape and irrigation changes so edges line up and nothing gets torn out later.

Why One Team Matters Here

Turf Is the Last Layer, Not the First Decision

Good-looking turf depends on grading, drainage, and irrigation decisions made before the first roll is cut. Altavera handles those as one scope.

  • 01

Drainage is settled before turf arrives.

Grading, French drains, and catch basins are part of the same scope, so a lot beside an irrigation ditch or a sloped yard that sheds runoff is corrected before excavation for the base.

  • 02

    Irrigation gets rerouted, not abandoned.

Converting lawn to turf can leave old spray heads buried under the base. We cap or reroute zones to keep remaining beds and trees watered, and may recommend keeping sprinklers to cool the turf in summer, whether the lot runs on pressurized or irrigation-district water.

  • 03

The base is built for freeze-thaw.

Treasure Valley winters cycle above and below freezing. A compacted, free-draining base that does not hold water is what keeps turf from heaving into lumps and seams from opening by spring.

  • 04

One contact handles the whole yard.

Turf rarely stands alone. When the plan also includes patios, fencing, or planting, one team sequences it so finished turf is not driven over or dug up by the next trade.

FAQ

Artificial Turf FAQs: Treasure Valley, Idaho

How much does artificial turf installation cost in the Treasure Valley?

It depends on your site, so an accurate number only comes after a site visit. The size of the area, how much excavation and base material the site needs, the turf product, and whether drainage or irrigation changes are part of the scope all shape the budget. Altavera prepares a written proposal after the on-site estimate, and third-party financing is available for projects up to $100,000.

Will artificial turf drain on hard or compacted soil?

Yes, when the base is built for it. Hard subsoil and compacted builder fill slow water almost to a stop, so turf laid on a thin base over them tends to puddle. We excavate, check how the subsoil drains, and build a compacted, free-draining base graded toward an outlet, adding a French drain or catch basin where water still has nowhere to go.

Is pet turf a good idea for dogs in summer heat?

Yes, pet turf works, with two things to plan for. Like any plastic, synthetic turf gets much hotter than natural grass in full sun, so shade and placement matter. Turf drains on its own and Altavera can add extra drainage access, but no infill eliminates odor, so the turf needs to be kept clean and rinsed regularly.

Can I install artificial turf in an HOA community?

Yes, in most cases, as long as your HOA approves it. HOAs usually want to see a turf sample, and Altavera can provide samples and the scope details they ask for, such as turf type, layout, and edging. Submit for review before work begins.

What happens to my sprinklers when I switch part of my yard to turf?

The zones under the new turf get capped or rerouted so remaining trees, shrubs, and beds still get water. Whether the lot runs on irrigation-district water or a pressurized system, we adjust heads and lines before the base goes in. Some homeowners convert nearby beds to drip irrigation at the same time, and in some yards we recommend keeping sprinklers that can cool the turf during summer heat.

Does artificial turf need a permit?

It depends on the scope and your city or county. A straightforward turf install is treated differently from a project that also changes grading, redirects drainage, or adds structures, so requirements are confirmed for each job. When a permit is needed, Altavera pulls it and manages it with the city or county.

Will turf hold up to freeze-thaw winters?

Yes, if the base stays dry. Winter damage comes from water trapped under the turf that freezes, expands, and heaves the surface. A compacted, free-draining base with secure edging keeps the surface flat through the cold months.

Which cities do you install artificial turf in?

Altavera installs artificial turf across the Treasure Valley in Ada, Canyon, and Gem counties. That includes Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, Caldwell, Star, Kuna, Middleton, Garden City, and Emmett.
